Plot 202 is an area of land 80 km west of Johannesburg.
Following a violent attack – involving her, and her family – documentary photographer Penney Ellis has produced a photobook that focuses on the pressures of a family living in rural post-apartheid South Africa.
Attacks on vulnerable people are increasing as feelings of disenchantment grow.
Broken government promises and a high level of corruption has led to a climate of mass poverty and frustration.
Many of the book’s images capture feelings of reflection, contemplation and irritation, as the family come to terms with living on plot that has become impossible to sell.
There is a pervading atmosphere of confinement and threat.
