Next to nothing

Plot 202 is an area of land 80 km west of Johannesburg.

Following a violent attack on her elderly parents, documentary photographer Penney Ellis produced a photobook that exposes the pressures experienced by a family living in rural post-apartheid South Africa.

Attacks on vulnerable people are increasing as feelings of disenchantment grow.

Broken government promises and a high level of corruption has led to a climate of mass poverty and frustration.

Many of the book’s images capture feelings of reflection, contemplation and irritation, as the family come to terms with living on a plot that has become impossible to sell.

There is a pervading atmosphere of confinement and threat.
